Viking Axes Hand Forged Norse Battle Axes | ZB Knives

ZB Knives offers a collection of hand-forged Viking axes built for collectors, bushcraft users, and historical reenactors who need functional tools, not wall decorations. Each axe head is forged from high carbon steel, fitted to ash or hardwood handles with leather or rope wraps, and finished with traditional Norse engravings. ZamHmong LLC has operated this workshop for over 20 years, using hand-forging techniques rooted in the historical construction of Norse weapons. Every order ships free within the United States. Browse the collection and find the axe that fits your purpose.

WHO THIS COLLECTION IS FOR

You want a hand-forged axe with provenance one that shows real forge marks, holds Norse engravings with depth, and displays properly on a wall or stand. The Viking War Axe ($175) delivers that. The ash wood handle and leather wrap withstand handling without requiring any finishing work on your end.

The Bushcraft User: You need an axe that processes wood at a campsite, takes edge abuse, and stays balanced through a full day of use. The Bushcraft Axe ($199) has a high-carbon forged-steel head, a rope-wrapped hardwood handle for grip in wet conditions, and a build profile designed for sustained outdoor use rather than aesthetics.

The Reenactor or Cosplayer: You need a visually accurate Norse axe that looks period-correct in photos and on-site at events, and holds up to repeated handling. The Valhalla Series Viking Axe ($149) is the entry point: Norse-inspired profile, functional construction, and a price that makes acquiring multiple props practical.

WHAT MAKES THESE AXES DIFFERENT

Hand-forged steel heads, not cast, not stamped. Every axe head in this collection is individually hand-forged from high-carbon steel. Forging aligns the steel's grain structure, producing a head that holds an edge longer than cast or stamped alternatives.

High-carbon steel construction rated for edge retention. High-carbon steel holds a sharper working edge than stainless steel. These axe heads are forged from high-carbon stock and hand-finished, giving you a blade that bites into hardwood cleanly from the first swing.

Norse engravings cut by hand, not laser etched. The engravings on each axe head are applied using traditional hand techniques. Laser etching produces shallow, uniform marks. Hand-cut engravings have depth and variation that lend the piece visual and structural authenticity.

Ash wood and hardwood handles are shock-absorbing, not decorative. Ash wood has been the handle material of choice for working axes across Scandinavia for centuries because it absorbs impact shock without splitting. Every handle in this collection is fitted, not glued, and wrapped in leather or rope to retain grip.

20+ years of hand forging experience behind every piece. ZB Knives is operated by ZamHmong LLC, a blade workshop with over two decades of experience in traditional hand forging. These are not factory-produced axes relabeled with Norse imagery.

Free US shipping on every order. No thresholds, no upsell required. Every axe in this collection ships to any US address at no additional cost.

HOW TO CHOOSE

Pick based on primary use, not aesthetics alone.

For display and collecting: The Viking War Axe ($175) features the most detailed Norse engravings and the cleanest ash wood-and-leather finish. It photographs well and holds up to display without additional treatment.

For outdoor and bushcraft use: The Bushcraft Axe ($199) is the only model in the collection specifically built for sustained wood processing. The rope-wrap handles moisture better than bare wood grips, and the head geometry is optimized for splitting and chopping rather than for a decorative profile.

For reenactment or cosplay on a budget: Start with the Valhalla Series ($149). It gives you a functional, Norse-profile axe at the lowest price in the collection. If you need multiple axes for a group event, this is the practical choice.

If you're unsure, the Viking War Axe ($175) is the most versatile; it works for display, light outdoor use, and reenactment without compromising any of its purposes.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

After each use, wipe the steel head dry with a clean cloth and apply a thin coat of mineral oil or food-grade oil to prevent surface oxidation. Store the axe with the leather sheath on; if your model includes one, bare steel left in humid conditions will develop surface rust within 48 hours. Resharpen the edge with a whetstone at 20–25 degrees per side when the blade begins to skate rather than bite. Inspect the handle-to-head fit every 3–4 uses; a loose head is a safety issue and can be re-tightened before it becomes a replacement problem.

FAQ

What type of steel are ZB Knives Viking axes made from?

All axes in this collection use high-carbon forged-steel heads. High-carbon steel takes a sharper edge than stainless steel and holds it longer under impact use. The trade-off is that high-carbon steel requires oiling after use to prevent surface oxidation  a simple step that takes under a minute.

What is a bearded Viking axe?

A bearded axe, historically called a Skeggøx, has an extended lower blade that drops below the level of the handle socket. This extended "beard" lets the user hook and pull a shield, grip the axe lower on the handle for precision cuts, or use the blade for woodworking tasks. Several models in this collection feature a bearded profile.

Are these axes functional or display-only?

Every axe in this collection is functional. The hand-forged high-carbon steel heads hold a working edge and are built for actual use, including wood processing and outdoor tasks. Display use is equally viable  the Norse engravings and handle wraps are finished to collector standards.

What is the difference between a Viking axe and a regular modern axe?

Viking axes typically have a thinner, wider blade profile designed for cutting rather than splitting. Modern utility axes are often thicker and wedge-shaped, built for splitting wood with brute force. Viking-style axes also have longer cutting edges relative to head weight, making them faster to swing. The Bushcraft Axe ($199) uses a Viking-derived profile specifically because it cuts more efficiently than a standard camp axe.

Can I use a Viking axe for camping and bushcraft?

The Bushcraft Axe ($199) is built specifically for this purpose. It handles wood processing, limbing, and campsite tasks. The high-carbon steel head takes edge wear better than stainless camp tools, and the rope-wrapped handle maintains grip when wet. It is not a splitting maul  use it for limbing, cutting, and general campsite wood prep.

How heavy was a historical Viking axe?

Viking battle axes ranged from approximately 1 to 2.5 kg (2.2 to 5.5 lbs) depending on type. Throwing axes and hand axes were lighter, under 1 kg. The large two-handed Dane axe reached 2+ kg. ZB Knives axes fall in the 1–2 kg range, consistent with functional Norse hand and war axe dimensions.

Where are ZB Knives axes forged?

ZB Knives axes are hand forged in ZamHmong LLC's workshop using traditional forging techniques. The workshop has over 20 years of experience in blade-making. ZB Knives does not claim US manufacture — the axes are hand forged using traditional methods and imported for US sale with free domestic shipping.

What is the best Viking axe for a first-time buyer?

The Valhalla Series Viking Axe, at $149, is a practical starting point. It delivers a functional, Norse-profile hand-forged axe at the lowest price in the collection. If your budget extends to $175, the Viking War Axe adds leather wrap, detailed engravings, and an ash wood handle that improves the long-term ownership experience.

Do the axes come with a sheath?

Leather sheaths are available on selected models in this collection. Product pages specify sheath inclusion. If a sheath is not included with your selected model, storing the mineral oil in a dry environment is recommended to protect the bare steel head.

Are handmade Viking axes worth buying over factory-produced versions?

Hand-forged axes have grain-aligned steel from the forging process, which improves edge retention and structural integrity compared to cast or stamped heads. Factory-produced axes are made faster and at lower cost, but they typically use softer steel alloys and skip the hand finishing that gives forged axes their edge geometry. For collectors and serious users, the difference in long-term edge performance and visual character justifies the price difference.
